Counter-surveying District Six and Stellenbosch
September 6, 2023 @ 12:30 pm - 1:45 pm
This presentation is an overview of the research Dr Motala has been carrying out in District Six, Cape Town. It will focus on the mapping of the site, and the resulting research projects that have emerged over the last 15 years. He will focus on the development of a methodology called “counter-surveying” which involves the finding and marking out of the locations of sites that no longer physically exist. Dr Motala will reflect on the multi-disciplinary methodological bases of his heritage work in District 6. He will discuss how he used techniques of GIS mapping, surveying, oral history, photographs, film, mobile technologies, and local community-based archives to develop his methodology of inquiry.
