This presentation starts by contextualising violence in South Africa to generate more holistic insights and approaches to the eradication of gender-based violence. Next, as with violence, the concept gender is explored with relevance to the local contexts, which evolves into the next talking points “What is a man?” And what would it take to shift the mindsets of men?” To respond to such questions, it is necessary to examine what healing is and what unique healing mechanisms might be needed to treat boys and men. The presentation concludes with an indigenous African ontology of self, that differs from notions of personhood that had violated the spirit of men, in that it is founded on the truth of who we really are, which is the most potent kind of healing.
