Biography
Mohhadiah Rafique is a PhD candidate in Psychiatry at Stellenbosch University. She holds a BSc degree in Human Life Sciences with psychology, BA Hons in Psychology (cum laude), and MA in Research Psychology from Stellenbosch University. Currently, she is a doctoral fellow at AVReQ under the SARChi Chair in Violent Histories and Transgenerational Trauma. Mohhadiah is also a part-time research assistant in the Africa Neuroethics Research Group, a member of the African Global Mental Health Institute’s Advocacy and Policy Working Group and serves on the Transformation Committee in the Department of Psychiatry. Her research interests lie in the mental health of marginalized communities, working towards the decolonial project, and incorporating arts-based methods for eliciting data.
Current Research Project
Mohhadiah’s current research project for her PhD focuses on Decolonizing Psychiatry through Critical Consciousness by exploring the intersections of transgenerational trauma and the role it plays on the diagnosis and treatment of Schizophrenia.
