Irshaad Suliman is a master’s student working towards a MA in History through AVReQ at Stellenbosch University (SU). He holds a BA in Anthropology and History from the University of the Free State (UFS) and an Honours in History from the University of the Western Cape (UWC). He began his career as a Digitisation Assistant at the UWC-Robben Island Museum-Mayibuye Archives. His research interests explore historical justice, deaths in detention, human rights, memory, and anti-apartheid activism in South Africa. Through archival research, forensic evidence, and legal analysis, he uncovers overlooked narratives, contributing to discussions on justice, accountability, and historical memory.
Current Research Project
Irshaad’s research investigates the 1970 inquest and the recent reopening of Imam Abdullah Haron’s case, focusing on the role of forensic evidence in reshaping historical narratives. Contextualizing Haron’s death within anti-apartheid activism and human rights violations challenges past accounts and highlights the need for truth and accountability in post-apartheid reconciliation. Through historical, legal, and human rights analysis, the study seeks to deepens the understanding of resistance movements and contributes to the ongoing pursuit of justice.
