February 14, 2022 - February 16, 2022
The new centre will be launched with a series of events featuring leading artists and scholars over two days. The opening hybrid event for the launch on 15 February, which will be curated by Tamar Garb (University College London), titled “The Aesthetics of Violence, the Violence of Aesthetics”, will feature scholar artists Stella Viljoen (Stellenbosch University), Gabrielle Goliath (Wits University), Jay Pather and Nomusa Makhubu (University of Cape Town). On the second and final day, 16 February, jazz musician Mandla Mlangeni, whose father was killed by the apartheid security police will engage with an in-person audience through words and music on “Violent Histories: Pathways to Light.”
