Current Research

The research project undertaken by the candidate delves into the complex social phenomenon of ukuphambana within the isiXhosa community in Gugulethu, Cape Town. Inspired by personal experiences witnessing a close family member undergo ukuphambana, the study aims to explore the locally constructed meanings of this phenomenon. By using a cultural anthropological lens, the research seeks to understand how Xhosa families in Gugulethu make sense of ukuphambana through their lived experiences and family narratives. The main research question revolves around understanding how Xhosa families affected by ukuphambana interpret and cope with this social phenomenon. The sub-questions focus on how these families construct meaning around ukuphambana, their experiences with it, and their strategies for seeking help and dealing with the challenges it presents. This project addresses a gap in the literature by providing culturally grounded theorization and insights into the psychological and social implications of ukuphambana within the Xhosa community.
