This seminar draws on recent research, which suggests that dehumanisation in South Africa continues to reflect the socially constructed and hierarchical race categories instilled by the apartheid regime and maybe one mechanism through which socio-economic inequality is perpetuated. Developing contextually appropriate interventions to curb dehumanisation is therefore of great importance and would require careful ethical considerations to aid in breaking down, rather than reinforcing, existing power dynamics.
