In Conversation with Richard Zide’s son, Professor Gordon N Zide

As Stellenbosch University reflects on its complicated history, it is also beginning to reckon with what it owes to those who have contributed to the life and thriving of the institution and its people. On 2 September, we will be honouring the life and contribution of Richard Zide who worked for Stellenbosch University for over 50 years. Zide served as a waiter at Stellenbosch University residences for over 50 years, building community, raising a family, and supporting our students in this town in a time where time of deep division across the country. Through his life story, we will explore the themes of recognition and repair, and receive an insight into what life in Stellenbosch was like through the eyes of his son, Professor Gordon Zide, who has gone on to be an important figure in the Higher Education sector in South Africa.

Professor Gordon N Zide is an esteemed public anthropologist, a social transformation scholar and an outstanding driver of Pan-Africanism. He is a believer in economic and social equality and justice for all, irrespective of political affiliation and inclination. He is respected in academia both nationally and globally. He has a wealth of experience in Higher Education management and governance processes.
