In a remarkable display of academic prowess and collaborative spirit, The Centre for the Study of the Afterlife of Violence and the Reparative Quest (AVReQ) recently hosted the Postdoc Research Blitz. Organized in partnership with the Postdoc Office, Division for Research and Development, this event provided a unique platform for postdoctoral researchers to present their ongoing projects and engage in dynamic discussions with their academic peers.

The AVReQ Postdoc Research Blitz, held on Wednesday, 18 October 2023, at the AVReQ Seminar, brought together a diverse array of researchers from various disciplines. The theme for the event, “Research for Social Impact,” resonated throughout the presentations, showcasing the commitment of postdocs to contribute meaningfully to societal issues.

The format of the event was both efficient and engaging, with each presenter allotted 10 minutes – a 5-minute presentation followed by a 5-minute question and answer session. This structure allowed for a lively exchange of ideas, fostering a sense of community and collaboration among the attendees.

Theme of Social Impact: A Guiding Principle

The event aimed to highlight research that not only contributes to the academic landscape but also addresses pressing societal challenges. AVReQ encouraged participants to explore opportunities for collaboration, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary work in creating a meaningful social impact.

Postdocs from various disciplines, including AVReQ NIHSS (National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences) funded scholars and researchers from departments across the university, actively participated in the event. The presentations covered a wide range of topics, from environmental studies to social sciences, reflecting the diversity of research interests within the academic community.

Recognition and Rewards for Excellence

The highlight of the AVReQ Postdoc Research Blitz was the announcement of the winner, Dr Refilwe Mofokeng. Currently supervised by Prof Sophie Van der Heyden (SU) and Dr Deena Pillay (UCT), Dr Mofokeng presented her study entitled “Heavy metal accumulation in the endangered seagrass, Zostera capensis in three Western Cape estuaries.” Her research focused on determining sediment metal composition in the Olifants, Langebaan, and Breede estuaries, as well as investigating metal bioavailability in Zostera capensis. The hypothesis centered around the translocation of heavy metals from sediment to leaf tissue.

As the winner, Dr Mofokeng received a Research Grant from the Postdoc Office, aimed at supporting her in developing the project into a publication. AVReQ pledged to match this grant and further provide support, including writing retreat mentorship, demonstrating their commitment to nurturing impactful research within their academic community.

A Heartfelt Thanks from AVReQ

AVReQ expressed sincere gratitude to everyone involved in planning and participating in the Postdoc Research Blitz. The event successfully elevated the visibility of postdoc research, inspired collaboration, and opened doors for recognition. AVReQ’s commitment to supporting researchers in their academic endeavors was evident throughout the event, reinforcing their role as a catalyst for academic excellence and social impact.
