In a resounding recognition of a distinguished career dedicated to the advancement of sociology, the British Sociological Association (BSA) has bestowed the coveted 2023 Distinguished Service to British Sociology Award upon Prof. John Brewer, emeritus professor at Queen’s University Belfast.

This esteemed accolade, judged on outstanding contributions to British sociology, is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated unparalleled commitment and have significantly shaped the discipline through a life dedicated to sociological pursuits.

Prof. Brewer’s journey is a testament to his unwavering dedication. Hailing from Shropshire and educated at the Universities of Nottingham and Birmingham, he has left an indelible mark at the University of East Anglia, the University of Aberdeen (where he served as Head of Department), and Queen’s University Belfast, where he held the esteemed position of Head of the School of Sociology.

An acclaimed author, Prof. Brewer has penned 16 influential books, including notable works such as “C Wright Mills and the Ending of Violence,” “Peace Processes: A Sociological Approach,” and “The Public Value of Social Sciences.” His scholarship has not only enriched academic discourse but has also had a profound impact on the sociological landscape.

A Fellow of distinguished institutions such as the Royal Society of Arts, the Academy of Social Sciences, and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Prof. Brewer’s accolades extend to his membership in the Royal Irish Academy. His leadership as Chair of the British Sociological Association from 2004–2006 and subsequent role as President from 2009–2012 underscore his commitment to advancing the field.

In a feature for the BSA’s magazine, Network, Prof. Brewer reflected on the book that shaped his career, a dog-eared copy of Ronnie Frankenberg’s “Communities in Britain.” This insightful auto-ethnography, with its scribbles and underlining, laid the foundation for Prof. Brewer’s perception of sociology as the study of real-life experiences.

Upon receiving the Distinguished Service to British Sociology Award, Prof. Brewer expressed his delight, stating, “I am thoroughly delighted to receive this award. I have enormous respect for the BSA, and I consider my service to the Association as a highlight of my career.”

AVReQ congratulates Prof. John Brewer on this well-deserved honor, acknowledging his profound impact on British sociology and celebrating his exceptional contributions to the field.
