This year our seminar theme was “Legacies of Violence, Social Change and Transformation.” The seminar aimed to explore the interplay of traumatic histories, civic life, social justice and the arts. Invited speakers in the series were drawn from an interdisciplinary group of scholars nationally and internationally.

Professor, Maurice Apprey, a native of Ghana, is a psychoanalyst, and one of a handful who were trained by Anna Freud at the Hampstead Clinic in London. He is Professor of Psychiatry and the Dean of African-American Affairs at the University of Virginia. His standing-room only lecture on Reconfiguring the Legacies of Racialized Trauma was at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (Stias).
